Wendell Howard Matthias, 72, of Denver, died Friday, December 26, 2008, at his home of cardiac amyloidosis.
Wendell was born November 29, 1936, the son of Lorenz and Regina (Mickan) Matthias in Waverly, Iowa. He was baptized and confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church-Klinger. He attended Immanuel Lutheran School-Klinger, Denver High School, and graduated from Wartburg College in 1958. On June 6, 1959, he was united in marriage to Elaine Schneider in Chicago, Illinois. He served in the Army Reserves from July 1960 to September 1964. Wendell farmed in the Denver area his entire working life, retiring in October 1996.
Throughout his life he served his church and community with great pride. A lifetime member of Immanuel Lutheran Church-Klinger, he served as deacon and on the church council for numerous years. As a man of his community he served in several capacities. Wendell was one of the founding builders for what is now Willow Run Country Club in Denver. In 1986 he was a member of the National Leadership Committee-Wartburg Design for Tomorrow. For his volunteer work with the Denver Schools he received the Governor's Volunteer Award in 1991. He was a lifetime charter member of the Denver Lions Club and received the Coleman Honorary Award from the Iowa Lions Foundation. Wendell enjoyed showing and raising cattle with his children and grandchildren. One of his proudest moments was earning the Reserve Grand Champion title at American Royal in Kansas City in 1998.
Survivors include his wife Elaine of Denver, one daughter, Wendy (Robert) Lamos of Waverly, one son; Brent (Kari) Matthias of Waverly, six grandchildren; Matthew Lamos of Las Vegas, Nevada, Megan Lamos of Waverly, Brenden, Kali, Kira, and Keela Matthias of Waverly, two brothers; Eugene (Jan) Matthias of Readlyn, and Warren (Elaine) Matthias of Tucson, Arizona. He is preceded in death by his parents, daughter, Renee, in April 2008, and a nephew, Tim Tjaden.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, December 31, 2008, at Immanuel Lutheran Church-Klinger with burial in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, December 30, 2008, at the Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home in Denver and for an hour prior to service time at the church on Wednesday.
