Vernon Stuart Swinton, 83, of Waverly, Iowa, died Friday, December 14, 2012, at the University of Iowa Hospital, after suffering a stroke.
Vernon was born on May 5, 1929, near Charles City, the son of Fred and Hattie (Knutson) Swinton. He attended school in Nashua and Plainfield, graduating in 1948. Vernon was a lifelong dairy and crop farmer, north of Waverly, until retiring in 2002. Following retirement, he worked at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Waverly, as a maintenance engineer.
Vernon was confirmed at the United Methodist Church in Nashua, and a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Waverly, in which he was a long time, faithful volunteer. He was a kind, hardworking and giving person. He enjoyed attending sporting events for his children and grandchildren.
Vernon is survived by his wife, Donna (Niemeyer) Swinton; daughter, Sandra (Terri Davis) Swinton of Waverly; son, Scot "Opie" (Lori) Swinton of Waverly, Teri Sanders; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; siblings, Doris White of Emmetsburg, Donald (Dorothy) Swinton of Waverly, Herbert Swinton of Waverly, Maurice (Alice) Swinton of Dixson, IL, Helen Ascher of Clarksville, Lois Brodt of Waverly, and Roger (Marlys) Swinton of Shell Rock; sister-in-law Bernice Swinton of Waterloo; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his son, Ronald Swinton; granddaughter, Kendra Swinton; his parents; sisters, Mildred Schulz, Wilma Breand, and Alfreeda Albaur; and brothers, Harold, Willard, and Dale.
Vernon's body has been cremated, and visitation will be held on Tuesday, December 18, 2012, from 5 to 7 pm at the Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home in Waverly. On Wednesday, December 19, 2012, at 10:30 am, there will be a luncheon and time of fellowship at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, to celebrate Vernon's life. The luncheon is open to the public and everyone is welcome to come. A private family committal service, with pastors Val Swinton and Curt Schneider officiating, will be held on a later date at Harlington Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the family for later designation.
