Regina Mary Milligan, 91, of Waverly, died Wednesday, September 12, 2018, at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City.
Regina was born September 1, 1927, in West Liberty, Iowa, the daughter of Rhinehart and Mary (VanAken) Kaalberg. She graduated from Wilton High School in 1945. On February 24, 1946, she was united in marriage to William Milligan in Muscatine, Iowa. To this union, seven children were born. The couple would farm in the Fairfield area until moving to Waterloo in 1953. They moved to Waverly in 1976. Regina was employed with the US Post Office in several capacities from 1965 until her retirement in 1985. William passed away in 1990 and Regina continued to live on the farm outside of Waverly until the time of her passing.
Regina was known for her sense of humor and her ability to laugh in most every situation; a trait she shared with her family and has now passed on to future generations. She was an avid crossword puzzle solver and enjoyed birdwatching.
Regina is survived by two daughters, Gina (Ron) Cousins of Iowa City and Barb (Jim) Oberle of Waverly, four sons, Chris (Karen) Milligan of Denver, Iowa, Will Milligan of Waverly, Joe (Kim) Milligan of Blountstown, Florida and Jack (Cindy) Milligan of Ballwin, Missouri, 13 grandchildren, Ronnie Cousins, Caren Cousins, Katie (Josh) Sabourin, Doug (Lisa) Oberle, Annalea Milligan, Madeline (Michael) Lowe, Elizabeth (Mike) Lorentz, Emily Milligan, Kyndal Williams, Annika Milligan, Ian Milligan, Sam Milligan and Andy Milligan, five great grandchildren, Ryker Oberle, Elias Lowe, Rylea, Caise and Lakynn Williams, one sister-in-law, Sherrie Kaalberg. She is preceded in death by her parents, husband William, her son, Dennis Alan Milligan, ten siblings and their spouses, Joanne Kaalberg, Frances (Ran) Johnson, Barney (Helen) Kaalberg, Arch (Gertie) Kaalberg, Edward (Helen) Kaalberg, Anita (Gene) Leatherman, Florence (Deke) Atkinson-Cain, Helen (Marion) Leatherman and Morey Kaalberg.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, October 5, 2018, at St. Mary Catholic Church in Waverly with Father David Ambrosy officiating. Burial of cremated remains will be held following the service in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, Waverly. Please continue in the celebration of Regina’s life at a luncheon held immediately following the burial at the Chris Milligan house, 2577 Killdeer Avenue, Denver, Iowa. The family will greet friends from 9:00 a.m. until service time at the church on Friday, October 5, 2018. Memorials may be directed to the American Diabetes Association.
