Norman Shatzer passed away on September 18, 2018 at Cedar Valley Hospice House. Norman (Norm) was born June 16, 1940 in Quincy, IL the first born of Charles and Zilpha (Gruber) Shatzer.
Throughout his life, he lived in Illinois and Iowa, where his family worked at various farms in several surrounding towns. After high school, Norman married, held a few different jobs in Waverly, and raised his family.
In 1960 he met Janice Pyer. They married on January 21, 1961 at First Baptist Church, Waverly. To this union they had three children; William, Alan, and Janeen.
From 1959 - 1961 Norm worked at Peters Gas Station; 1961-1966 at Nuss Hatchery; and from 1966 - 1996 at City of Waverly, from which he retired. After retirement, Norm volunteered for Waverly Health Center doing several different positions.
Norm enjoyed traveling and taking walks until his health declined, going out for meals; especially to Taco Johns, where the staff were his friends and "everyone knew his name". He very much enjoyed his children, grandchildren, and all of his family every time he visited with them. He especially loved baseball and was quite possibly the biggest and most loyal Cubs fan! He followed them his entire life and seeing his Cubs finally win the World Series in 2016, was a dream come true for Norm! He took several bus trips after retirement to Chicago to see the Cubs play, often times taking a family member along.
Norm's faith was important to him. He became a Christian at 10 years old when he attended summer Bible school in Shell Rock. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Waverly.
Norm is survived by his wife Janice of 57 years, his children and their spouses; William (Jana) of Cedar Rapids, IA, Alan (Karla) of LaCrosse, WI, and Janeen (Dave) Noel of Shell Rock, IA, nine grandchildren and their significant others; Jenna (Keith), Jacob (Keshia), Alie (Heath), Christina, Ty (Logan), Katie, Thomas (Claire), Lucas (Dana), and Kelsea (Tyler). Twelve great grandchildren, his sister Charlotte (Maurice) of Omaha, NE, his brother Carroll of Hartley, IA, his Aunt Jo of Ewing, MO, former sister-in-law Virginia of Hampton, IA, brother- in-law Bill of Cedar Falls, IA, and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents; Tom and Edna, and Charles and Florence. His parents; Charles in 1982 and Zilpha in 2014, his brother Tommy in 1957, his Uncle Bill in 2009, and his sister-in-law, Joyce in 2017.
