Ned N. Stirlen, 77, of Waverly, Iowa, died early Sunday morning, March 24, 2002, at the Waverly Municipal Hospital of natural causes.
He was born on June 1, 1924, in Sigourney, Iowa, the son of Carl & Gertrude (Neas) Stirlen. He graduated from high school in Sigourney and then attended William Penn College in Oskaloosa, Iowa, for one year before entering the US Army during WWII. He served in the US Army Field Artillery and also served a stint at the Pentagon. On November 6, 1942, he was united in marriage to Marilyn Miner in Lancaster, Missouri. Following his discharge from service, he and Marilyn made their home in Sigourney where Ned worked for his uncle in the Neas Lumber Yard, a business started by Ned's grandfather. In 1967 they moved to Waverly and Ned established Stirlen and Son Contractors. In 1980 he retired from his business and for a time worked with his son Steve in Rockford, Illinois. In 1987 Ned began working for Wal-Mart in Waverly in sales, eventually becoming a Wal-Mart Greeter. He retired in 1999 from Wal-Mart and he and Marilyn have lived in Waverly ever since.
He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Waverly. Ned loved to play golf throughout the years, and continued to enjoy playing bridge.
Ned is survived by his wife, Marilyn of Waverly; two sons and their wives, Steve & Elba Stirlen of Rockford, Illinois, Jim & Virginia Stirlen of Bloomington, Minnesota; two daughters, Susan Dixon and her husband, Jerry of Bend, Oregon, Kathy Stirlen of Lafayette, Indiana; eleven grandchildren, and three great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, and one son, Bill Stirlen.
Memorial services will be Wednesday, March 27, 2002, 11:00 am at Trinity United Methodist Church, Waverly, with Pastor Tony Nester officiating. There will be no visitation, his body was immediately cremated. Memorials may be directed to the family for a later designation.
