On Friday, August 11, 2017, Myrtle L. Shipp Jensen of rural Plainfield passed away at the age of 88. Myrtle was born on November 10, 1928 to Lloyd and Cora Shipp on the family farm just a mile south of where she lived throughout her married life. She attended country school through the eighth grade and graduated from Waverly High School in 1946. Following graduation, Myrtle worked as a telephone operator in Plainfield.
On May 29, 1948, Myrtle married John W. Jensen. To that union five children were born: Linda (Don) DeVries of Plainfield; Alan (Joelle) Jensen of North English; Stanley (Teresa) Jensen of Dearborn, Michigan; Rita Jensen of Plainfield; and Carolann Jensen of Bondurant.
Myrtle and John farmed northeast of Plainfield for over 60 years. In addition, from 1983-2002, she served as a State Senate secretary.
Myrtle was a member of the Horton Baptist Church. For many years she taught Sunday School, assisted with Vacation Bible School, and organized a number of Christmas programs. She was also active in the Republican Party and in Farm Bureau, where she held county leadership positions.
Myrtle lived a life of service to her family and community and also served the people of Iowa for over 20 years, in a support role to Senator John. Although she was a silent party in most respects, Myrtle endured the stress and hard work that came with being a Senator's partner. Once John and she retired from the Senate in 2002, Myrtle loved spending more time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. They brought joy to her heart and kept her young.
Myrtle enjoyed watching sports of all kinds; she especially enjoyed watching ISU, UNI, and Iowa football and always cheered for the underdog. Watching the birds outside her farm home also brought joy to Myrtle.
In addition to her five children, Myrtle is survived by two sisters, Wilma Brase and Darlene Shipp; ten grandchildren--Meredith Breeden, Jessica Jensen, Cody Jensen, Lucas DeVries, Adam Breeden, JaneAnn Florez, Emily DeVries, Nick Breeden, Joshua Jensen, and Katie Johnson--and eleven great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband John, her parents, and her brother Eugene.
