Mary Frances Swinton, 83, of Waverly, Iowa, died Tuesday evening, March 8, 2005, at Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo from natural causes.
Mary was born on December 24, 1921, in Charles City, Iowa, the daughter of Val C. and Anna M.(Kann) Kuempel. Mary was baptized and later confirmed at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Charles City, Iowa. At the age of 8, Mary lost her mother and later, Val married Hildreth Davis. She attended Immaculate Conception School and graduated from High School in 1940. Mary then took a secretarial position with Oliver Farm Equipment in Charles City. On April 28, 1951, she was united in marriage to Dale M. Swinton at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Charles City. The couple then farmed on the Swinton Farm south of Plainfield, Iowa, and Mary also did the bookkeeping in her home for the Dairy Herd Improvement Association (DHIA). In 1977, the couple retired from farming and moved to their home in Waverly. Mary then went to work for Professional Planner and she served as Jim McDonald's secretary until 1986 when she retired. Dale died on December 25, 1995, and in 1998 she sold their home and moved to her apartment in Waverly. On January 10, 2005, Mary became a resident of Parkview Nursing and Rehab in Waterloo.
Mary was a faithful member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Waverly, where she was active with the C.C.W. She was a volunteer for the Waverly Municipal Hospital and also served as a Hospice volunteer. Mary has always enjoyed knitting, and has created an Afghan for each of her children and all of her grandchildren. Her greatest passion though comes from spending time with her children and their families.
Mary is survived by her four children and their spouses, Pastor Val and Deb Swinton of Clarksville, Iowa, Tom and Janice Swinton of Greenville, South Carolina, Steve and Nancy Swinton of Waverly and Janet and Bill Kopp of Middletown, Maryland; ten grandchildren, Laura & Sam Swinton, Stacy Lagger & her husband, Richard, Scott Swinton & his wife, Becky , Susanna Swinton, Angie Richmann & her husband, Mike, Doug Swinton, Christopher, Liana & Joey Kopp; three great-grandchildren, Shay, Mayah, Gabriella; two step grandchildren, five step great grandchildren; and one sister, Patricia Carr and her husband, Kenneth, of Floyd, Iowa. She was preceded in death by her parents, Val and Anna Kuempel, her step-mother, Hildreth Davis Kuempel; her husband, Dale M. Swinton; one daughter in 1957 in infancy, Rebecca Lynn Swinton; and two brothers, George "Buzz" Kuempel and William T. Kuempel.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, March 12, 2005, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Waverly, with Rev. Mike Tauke presiding. Burial will be in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Waverly. Visitation will be held on 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Friday at the Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home in Waverly. There will be a public Scripture Service at 8:00 p.m. on Friday at the Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home in Waverly. Memorials may be directed to the Swinton family.
