Obituary

Marvin James Ott, age 79, of Waverly, Iowa, died Thursday, April 25, 2019, at his home surrounded by his family.

Marvin was born on October 13, 1939, in Westgate, Iowa, the son of Fred and Marie (Scheckel) Ott. He was baptized on December 4, 1939, at Evangelical Lutheran Church in Fairbank, Iowa. Marv was raised in Arlington, Iowa and on April 11, 1954, was confirmed at St. John’s Lutheran Church and graduated from the Arlington High School in 1957. He then attended Wartburg College, Waverly, Iowa, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in 1961; Master of Education in 1966, from Northeastern State College, Talequah, Oklahoma; and Doctorate in Research and Statistical Methodology from University of Colorado, Greeley, Colorado. On June 9, 1963, Marvin was united in marriage to Janice Wegenast at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Denver, Colorado. He started his teaching career at Grundy Center, Iowa, High School (1961 to 1967) as a Math Teacher and Coach; Professor of Mathematics and Assistant Football Coach at Wartburg (1967 to 1974); Research Assistant Bureau of Research Services at University of Northern Colorado (1974 to 1976); and then returned to Wartburg College in 1976, and over the years served as Director of Administrative Computing, Registrar, and Director of Computing Services and Institutional Research, retiring in 2000.

Marv had a strong but quiet faith; he was in the process of reading the entire bible for the seventh time. He was a member at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church and Schools in Waverly for fifty years, where he served at various leadership roles and on the Church Council acting as treasurer. Marv also belonged to Waverly Planning and Zoning Commission (1979 to 1990). He had a passion for sports, especially golf, making four hole in ones during his lifetime. He coached little league baseball and Wartburg men's golf team after retirement. Marv also enjoyed fishing and hunting. He will always be remembered for his story telling, impact, and undivided attention he gave each grandchild.

Marvin’s memory is honored by: wife, Janice Ott of Waverly; two sons, Bradley (Christiana) Ott of Ft. Collins, Colorado and Andrew (Erika) Ott of Waverly; six grandchildren, Madison, AJ, Siriana, Simon, Addie, and Anaka; brother, Eldon (Janice) Ott of Marshalltown, Iowa; and two sisters-in-law, Rosemary Ott of Arizona and Susan (Lynn) Schlessman of Avon, Ohio.
