Marlis Jean Nielsen, 93, of Cedar Falls, formerly of Aplington, Waverly, Hampton, Parkersburg and Dumont, passed away on Monday, September 3, 2018, in Hospice care at New Aldaya Lifescapes in Cedar falls.
Marlis was born February 8, 1925, on a farm south of Dumont, the daughter of Vern and Flossie (Truax) Ritzman. Most of her early life was spent in the Dumont community where she was educated. Upon graduation from High School, Marlis worked in the Hemp Plant at Hampton, Iowa. This hemp was used for ropes on battle ships. Later, she worked as a temporary clerk for the U.S. Post Office in Dumont, and then for the Butler County ASC Office at Allison, Iowa. In October of 1954, she began work for Dr. M.D. Enna as his assistant and served in this capacity for twenty years in Dumont.
Marlis was baptized on the 4th day of April 1946 and one month later, May 4, 1946 was united in marriage to the love of her life, Ernest “Gordon” Nielsen at the Salem Evangelical United Methodist Church in Dumont where they both were members. The couple lived in the Dumont vicinity in a house and apartment on Main St. until 1974 when they moved to Aplington. They resided here for 20 years and were part of the First Reformed Church. After selling their home in Aplington they spent a small amount of time in an apartment in Parkersburg near the High School. In 1994 the couple moved to a home in Hampton, along Highway 65, and became members of the First Congregational Church. Seven years later they decided yard work was becoming a burden, so they moved to the Ledges in Waverly. They moved their church membership to Heritage United Methodist Church in rural Waverly in 2002. Marlis sold her condominium in September of 2016 and moved to Maple Manor Assisted Living in Aplington because of declining vision. After two major falls and hospitalization she moved to New Aldaya Lifescapes in Cedar Falls for skilled and nursing care.
Marlis’ strong faith sustained her through a cancer diagnosis as a young married woman and through many later years’ health issues with sight and hearing. She relied on her faith during many years as a caregiver to not only her husband but anyone who had a need. She entered her eternal home and met the Lord on the 3rd day of September at the age of 93 years and 7 months.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest “Gordon” Nielsen in 2009, her father and mother, Vern and Flossie Ritzman, sisters Verla (Mrs. Jack Penticoff), Audrey (Mrs. John Stemmerman), brothers, Harold and Vern Ritzman, sisters-in-law, Elsena Ritzman and Harriet Ritzman and brothers-in-law, John Stemmerman and Jack Penticoff.
She is survived by her sister-in-law, Naomi (Mrs. Vern Ritzman), sister-in-law, Margaret Hearn, both of Hampton and brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Warren and Betty Nielsen of Dumont, and many nieces and nephews. Marlis and Gordon were never blessed with children but they had two Godchildren, Rita (Trent) Gerdes of Waterloo, and David (Dana) Nolte of Olathe, Kansas.
