Obituary

Marjorie Doris Axon, 100, of Tripoli, formerly of Traer, died Monday, July 30, 2018, at UnityPoint-Allen Hospital in Waterloo.

Marjorie Doris Eckhardt Axon was born in rural Traer, Iowa on June 21, 1918. She was the fifth of eight children born to Peter and Edith Smith Eckhardt.

She attended the country school ¼ mile from her home where she and her siblings would haul buckets of water from their home to school. After completion of 6th grade Marge worked on her parents’ farm.

In 1937, she married Leonard Axon at the Congregational Church in Elkader, Iowa. To this union were born five children: Carol, John, Norma, Joyce and Michael. The family farmed in the Traer area until 1954 when they purchased their farm in Tripoli where she resided until her death.

Throughout the years Marge was involved in several livelihoods, in addition to farming, she candled eggs at Crittenden Produce and worked at the local Farmers Store. In later years she did upholstery work in her home. Her skills and attention to detail were evident in every piece of furniture she recovered.

After retirement Marge enjoyed tending to her gardens, needlework, bowling, playing cards and travelling. In later years when she was no longer physically able to enjoy those hobbies she took pleasure in bird watching and sitting on her front porch watching the comings and goings at the Caseys store and enjoying visits from family and friends. Marge’s talents and skills were many. She was an excellent cook and seamstress and took pleasure in making Christmas gifts for loved ones.

Marge is survived by one daughter, Joyce (Ron) Opfer of West Des Moines, Iowa, one son, Michael Axon of Frederika, Iowa, 10 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren, 11 great great grandchildren, one sister, Betty Eckhardt Sell of Traer, Iowa, one son-in-law, Don Buls of Tripoli. She is preceded in death by her parents, six siblings, husband Leonard Axon in 1990, two daughters, Carol Buls and Norma Jean Axon, and one son, John Axon.

Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, August 6th, 2018, at Faith United Church of Christ of Tripoli with Rev. Marilyn Sargent officiating. Burial will follow in the West Union Cemetery in Traer, Iowa.
