MEMORIAL TRIBUTE

Marie Matthias, 94, of Waverly, Iowa, and formerly of Denver, died Thursday, February 6, 2003, at the Bartels Lutheran Retirement Community of natural causes.
Marie was born on December 24, 1908, in Denver, Iowa, the daughter of Pastor Frederick and Anna (Beyer) Schoenbohm. She attended Denver Public School, and graduated from Gates Business College in Waterloo. On September 18, 1929, she was united in marriage to Arthur Matthias in St. Peter Lutheran Church, Denver. Throughout much of her life, she assisted her husband in operating funeral homes and furniture stores in Marengo, Hopkinton, and Denver, Iowa. She was an active volunteer, and held a number of leadership positions in church and community. For 68 years, most of them at St. Peter in Denver, she served as church organist. Arthur died in 1988, and in March of 2002 she entered the Bartels Lutheran Retirement Community where she had since lived.
Marie is survived by one son: Ronald Matthias (Donna) of Waverly; three granddaughters: Jeanne (Bradley Rupp) of Wichita, Kansas, Karen (Orville Jones, Jr.) of Waverly, Sara (Steven Dobbs) of Lagos, Nigeria; three step-grandchildren: Dawn (Mark Dobin) of Houston, Texas, Brent Anderson (Suzanne) of Delano, Minnesota, David Anderson (Kimberley) of Chanhassen, Minnesota; by seven great-grandchildren, seven step-great-grandchildren; one brother: Frederick Schoenbohm (Lillian) of Clinton; one sister: Rena (Victor Felten) of Valparaiso, Indiana. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, three sisters, and two brothers.
Celebration of Life services will be 11:00 AM, Monday, February 10, 2003, at St. Peter Lutheran Church, Denver, with Pastor Ron Bronemann officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be on Sunday, February 9, 2003, from 1:30 PM until 6:00 PM at the Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home, Denver. Memorials may be directed to the Organ Fund of St. Peter Lutheran Church.
