Lila I. Wiebke, 86, of Waverly, died Sunday March 3, 2002, at the Bartels Lutheran Retirement Community , Waverly, of natural causes.
She was born on December 21, 1915, in Johnson, Nebraska, the daughter of William & Ida (Bohling) Rohrs. She was baptized on January 16, 1916, at the Hickory Grove Lutheran Church by Rev. Theodore Streng and was confirmed at the same church on April 13, 1930, also by Rev. Streng. She attended Linden Grade School at Auburn, Nebraska, and graduated from Johnson High School, Johnson, Nebraska, in 1933. She then taught for several years in various schools in Nebraska, the last one being at Auburn, Nebraska. On July 23, 1940, she was united in marriage to Rev. Benjamin C. Wiebke at Hickory Grove Lutheran Church where he served as the pastor of the church. In 1946 they moved to DeWitt, Nebraska, and Rev. Wiebke served St. Paul's Lutheran Church there for 17 years, until 1963 when they retired and moved to Waverly. They lived on an acreage near Waverly until 1982 when they moved into Waverly. Rev. Wiebke died just two weeks later and Lila continued to live in their home until February 15 of this year when she became a resident of Bartels.
She was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Waverly, where over the years she had been active with the women's groups of the church. Lila loved traveling, and especially enjoyed her trip to Alaska. She had taught Sunday School for many years, sang in the church choirs, and had also served as a Bartels Auxiliary member.
Lila is survived by one son-in-law, Herbert Zelle of Waverly; two daughters-in-law, Shirley Wiebke of Nebraska City, Nebraska, Lou Ann Wiebke of Rochester, Minnesota; 9 grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; and one sister-in-law, Marie Rohrs of Johnson, Nebraska. She was preceded in death by her parents; her step-mother, Marie; her husband, Rev. Benjamin Wiebke; her daughter, Elinore Zelle; two sons, Vernon and Ben Wiebke; 2 brothers, Otto and Adolph; one sister, Edna Gerdes; and by one great grandson, Jeremy Betts.
Funeral services will be 11:00 am on Friday, March 8, 2002, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Waverly, with Pastor Joyce Sandberg officiating. Burial will be in the Harlington Cemetery, Waverly. Friends may call from 5:00 pm until 8:00 pm on Thursday at the Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home, Waverly. Visitation will also be for one hour on Friday at the church prior to the service. Memorials may directed to Bartels Chaplaincy Endowment Fund or to the family.
