Obituary

Lester J. Matthias, 88, of Waverly, Iowa, and formerly of Denver, Iowa, died Friday morning, December 21, 2007 at the Waverly Health Center.
He was born on January 12, 1919 in Readlyn, Iowa, the son of John H. and Minnie (Hagemann) Matthias. He was baptized February 2, 1919 and later confirmed in 1932 both at Immanuel Lutheran Church-Klinger, rural Readlyn. He attended country school and then Immanuel Lutheran Parochial School, graduating from the Readlyn High School in 1937. Lester then helped his parents on the farm. On November 30, 1940 he was united in marriage to Leona Schroeder at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Waterloo. The couple farmed the Matthias home farm south of Klinger for the next forty years, retiring in 1980. A year later they moved to Waverly, and Leona died on May 3, 1984 following a very brief illness. Lester continued to make his home in Waverly. On August 30, 1986 Lester married Arlene Lobeck at St. Peter Lutheran Church, Denver, and the couple made their home in Denver. Arlene died on October 18, 2007 at the Bartels Lutheran Retirement Community, just a short time after she and Lester had moved there.
Lester was a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church, Denver. During his school days, he enjoyed playing baseball and basketball. Lester loved to watch sports, especially baseball, but mostly enjoyed the times spent with his family.
He is survived by one daughter, Carol (Marvin) Luhring of Tripoli, Iowa; three step-daughters, Shirley (Roger) Thurm of Denver, Carol (Larry) Strottmann of Readlyn, Lorri (David) Shelstad of Milwaukee, Wisconsin; one step-son, Jerry (Connie) Lobeck of Denver; three grandchildren, Michelle (Tyson) Jacobi, Heather (Randy) Roshek, Kevin Luhring; 11 step-grandchildren; one great granddaughter, Rowan Jacobi; 21 step-great grandchildren; one step-great–great grandchild; and by his sister, Glenyce Bruns of Readlyn. He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Leona; his second wife, Arlene, and by 2 step great-grandchildren.
