LeRoy “Lee” Arnold Platte, 82, of Readlyn, died Wednesday, October 4, 2017, at his home in Readlyn.
Lee was born November 19, 1934, on his Grandparents farm in Maxfield Township, rural Denver, Iowa. He was baptized December 30, 1934, at St. John Lutheran-Maxfield and confirmed April 10, 1949, at St. Matthews Lutheran Church in Readlyn. He attended various country schools and graduated from Readlyn High School in 1954. On June 26, 1960, he was united in marriage to Nancy Matthias at College Hill Lutheran Church in Cedar Falls. Lee was employed by Rath Packing Company in Waterloo and Shield Bantam in Waverly. He then opened his own mechanic shop, first known as Lee’s Auto Repair and then became Platte Sales and Service. He also farmed on his parents’ farm and drove school bus for Wapsie Valley Schools. Nancy passed away in 2011 and Lee continued to live in Readlyn.
Lee was known as a man that was able to fix almost anything, and he continued to dabble in mechanics as he was able. He spent over 50 years working in the mechanic field. He served as a volunteer firefighter with Readlyn for 35 years, was a member of the Readlyn Historical Society and a past board member of the Readlyn Public Library.
Lee is survived by his daughter Jennifer (Daniel) Rathe of Park View, Iowa, and three grandchildren; Brylee, Mason and Clara Rathe. He is preceded in death by his parents and wife Nancy.
Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, October 9, 2017, at St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Readlyn with Pastor Jean Rabary officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 8, 2017, at the Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home in Readlyn and for an hour prior to services at the church on Monday. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Readlyn Public Library or St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Readlyn. On-line condolences may be left at www.kaisercorson.com.
