Lavern Moeller, 77, of Waverly, Iowa passed away on Monday, September 3, 2007 at the Bartels Lutheran Retirement Community in Waverly, Iowa from complications of lung cancer.

Lavern Edwin Moeller, son of August and Ida (Buss) Moeller was born on August 2, 1930, on a farm near Waverly. He was baptized on August 31, 1930 and confirmed on March 26, 1944 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Waverly. He attended St. Paul’s Christian Day School and graduated from Waverly High School in 1949. On September 12, 1950, he was united in marriage to Marldine Hein at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church with Dr. William Schmidt officiating. They farmed east of Waverly for 30 years.

After retiring from the family farm, Vernie and Marldine moved into town. Vernie enjoyed gardening, working in his workshop, traveling, playing cards, and listening to music. He was particularly fond of making woodworking projects for his family, especially his grandchildren.

Lavern was an active member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Waverly. He served on the church council, the evangelism board, the building and grounds committee, and the cemetery committee. He was also a volunteer custodian at the church and school. Lavern was a past member of the First Maxfield Insurance Board in Denver, Iowa and served as board president for many years. While farming, he was a member of various organizations related to his profession.

Lavern is survived by his wife, Marldine of Waverly; three daughters, Sandra (Richard) Wahl of Ann Arbor, Michigan; Luann (Greg) Scallon of Waverly, Iowa; and Julie (David) Jensen of Marion, Iowa; Lavern is also survived by eight grandchildren, Daniel (Suzanne), Matthew, Peter, and Katie Wahl; Cynthia (Jason) Bryant, Andrea, and Derek Scallon; and Joy Waughtal. Other survivors include sister in law, Helen Moeller; brother in law, Bruce (Marilyn) Hein, as well as eight nieces and nephews.

Lavern was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Lester Moeller, and son-in-law, Steven Waughtal.

Funeral service will be held on Friday, September 7, 2007 at 11:00 am at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Waverly with Pastor Joyce Sandberg officiating. Burial will be in St. Paul’s Lutheran Cemetery in Waverly. Friends may call from 5:00 pm until 8:00 pm on Thursday at the Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home in Waverly and one hour prior to services on Thursday at the church. Memorials may be left to St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Bartels Lutheran Retirement Community, or Cedar Valley Hospice.
