James W. Denner, 88 of Waverly, Iowa, died on Thursday, December 29, 2016, at the Waverly Health Center in Waverly.
Jim was born on September 17, 1928, in New Hampton, Iowa, the son of Leo and Lina (Weidler) Denner. He was baptized and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church in New Hampton. He graduated from Fredericksburg High School in 1947. He then attended Wartburg College, where he graduated in 1951, with a degree in Physical Education and Business. He was united in marriage to Lois Jean Shufelt on June 24, 1951 in Fredericksburg, Iowa. Upon graduation he started teaching and coaching at Montour High School. There his passion for teaching and coaching grew. From 1954-1956 he was at Colo High School and in 1956 he started teaching and coaching at Shell Rock High School in Shell Rock. He continued in the Waverly-Shell Rock School System for 31 more years, coaching and teaching until his retirement in 1991.
Jim was a member of the Waverly-Shell Rock Education Association, Iowa State Education Association, the National Education Association and the Iowa Baseball Coaches Association. Jim was remembered for his dedication to coaching and in 1993 he was inducted into the Iowa Baseball Coaches Hall of Fame. He was an avid sports fan and enjoyed watching and attending sports. He enjoyed playing golf and attending Iowa Hawkeye football games.
Jim is survived by his wife, Lois Denner of Waverly, Iowa; a son, Randy (Sue) Denner and a daughter, Patty Denner, both of Eldridge, Iowa; two grandchildren, Erin Denner of Eldridge, Iowa and Kayla Denner of Edina, Minnesota; and sister, Leona Kammeyer of New Hampton, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister, Helen; four brothers-in-law, John Fletcher, Wilmer Kammeyer, Ken Shufelt and Russell Gardner and a sister-in-law, Margaret Gardner.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, January 3, 2017, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Waverly with Pastor Joyce Sandberg officiating. Burial will be in Harlington Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Monday from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home in Waverly and also for one hour before services on Tuesday at the church. Memorials may be directed to St. Paul's Lutheran Church or to the Waverly-Shell Rock Athletic Department.
