Irma M. Mattke, 83, of Waverly, Iowa passed away on Wednesday, October 20, 2010 at the Bartels Lutheran Retirement Community in Waverly, Iowa.
Irma Marie Mattke was born on July 7, 1927, the daughter of George and Lila (Piper) Kidwell in Rockwell City, Iowa. At an early age Irma was adopted into the Carl and Hedwig Brase family who made their home near Horton, north of Waverly. Irma was baptized on July 28, 1935 at St John's Lutheran Church-Western Douglas and attended country school near her home. Following her formal education, she helped her family on the farm. When she was 18, she began working for the Marshall Canning Factory in Waverly and also helped several families in their homes. On February 18, 1946, she was united in marriage to Norman E. Mattke in Albert Lea, Minnesota. The couple made their home in Waverly where they raised their family. For many years, Irma and Norman owned and operated Norm's Studio, and over the years the couple took pictures for over 365 weddings. Irma also did a lot of oil paintings for the newly-weds. In 1974, Irma began her Electrolux vacuum cleaner business, which she owned and operated until 2008 when she retired and slowed down. Norm passed away on September 23, 2003 and Irma continued to live in their home until entering the Bartels Lutheran Retirement Community in March of 2008.
She loved making crafts and bowling, and had even bowled on several ladies teams that went on to be state champs. She and Norman loved to dance, garden, and fish. The couple always shared their garden with friends and neighbors, a tradition they kept up for many years. Irma loved to play bingo and would play as many as 14 cards at a time. Her great passion and blessing though was her family. She was a very dedicated mother and grandmother.
Survivors are her children, Judy (Dean) Miller of Waverly, Iowa, Michael (Jane) Mattke of Glenpool, Oklahoma, Mary (Jim) Sevey of Janesville, Iowa and Dennis (Beth) Mattke of Waverly, Iowa; 10 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; brother, Alfred (Carol) Brase of Waterloo, Iowa; three sisters-in-law, Florence Dodd of Alta, Iowa, Lois Brase of Minneapolis, Minnesota and Rosalee Brase of Horton, Iowa.
