Irma Widdel, 96, of Waverly, Iowa, died Thursday, October 10, 2013, at Bartels Lutheran Retirement Community in Waverly.
Irma, daughter of William and Martha Diercks Poock, was born February 6, 1917 in Thayer County, Deshler, NE. She was baptized into the Christian faith February 18, 1917 at St. Mark Lutheran Church in Ruskin, NE. After her father died when Irma was six years old, the family moved to Iowa to live with her grandparents, William and Marie Diercks for several years. When her mother married Herman Rathe of Readlyn, Irma and her siblings grew up on the Rathe farm. She attended Immanuel Lutheran School in Klinger, and was confirmed there in 1931.
Irma helped at home on the farm and later worked for the Rath family in Waterloo. During World War II, she also worked for Chamberlain Manufacturing. Before retiring, she worked in the housekeeping department at Bartels.
On Feb. 2, 1946 Irma was united in marriage to Ruben Widdel after Ruben returned from service in the Air Force. They were blessed with three children - Susan (Michael) Wanner of Taneyville, MO., Mary (Douglas) Mierow of Prior Lake, MN., and Brian of Carroll, IA., nineteen grandchildren and nineteen great grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister Marilyn Barz of Cheney, KS. She was preceded in death by her husband Ruben, grandson Zechariah Wanner, sister Violet Poock, brothers Roland (in infancy), Arnold, Raymond, and Gerald, stepsisters Amanda Lampson and Elsa Diercks and stepbrothers Ed & Reinhold Rathe.
Irma shared her many gifts and talents as a stay at home mom and served her church in many capacities. She was a charter member of the Lutheran Women's Missionary League and belonged to the Dorcas Society at St. John's Lutheran Church in Waverly. She enjoyed sewing quilts for Lutheran World Relief and baby gowns & blankets for Diana's Angels.
Funeral services celebrating Irma's life will be held at St. John's Lutheran Church in Waverly, on Monday, Oct. 14 at 10:30 am. Visitation will take place at Kaiser Corson Funeral Home in Waverly on Sunday, Oct. 13, from 2 - 5 pm and one hour prior to the service at the church. Memorials may be directed to St. John Lutheran Church Capital Campaign or St. John Lutheran Preschool. Online condolences may be left at www.kaisercorson.com.
