Helen Ray McKee, 97, of Waverly, Iowa, and formerly of Las Vegas, Nevada, died on January 19, 2019, at Bartels Lutheran Retirement Community in Waverly.
Helen was born on April 12, 1921, in Council Bluffs, Iowa, the daughter of John Charles and Susan Mary (Owens) Kull. She was baptized on October 5, 1930 in Council Bluffs and later confirmed there. Helen graduated from the Thomas Jefferson High School in Council Bluffs, Iowa, and then attended the New York Interior Design School. On June 4, 1942, Helen was united in marriage to Paul Frederick McKee in Council Bluffs, Iowa. The couple made their home in Council Bluffs and Clinton, Iowa, until 1961 when they moved to Waverly, Iowa. While in Waverly, Helen worked as a decorator for Jim Corson at Kaiser-Corson Home Furnishings for four years. In 1973, the couple moved to Horseshoe Bend, Arkansas, where Helen was the owner/operator of House of Color for eight years. In 1980, the couple moved to Las Vegas, Nevada, where Helen worked at Neiman Marcus for seven years. Paul died on December 17, 1983, and Helen continued to make her home in Las Vegas until she moved back to Waverly, Iowa on June 17, 2002, making her home at Centennial Oaks.
Helen is a member of Trinity United Methodist Church and a member of the Waverly Chapter O.E.S. #353 since 1943. Helen also was a Hospice Volunteer for seven years in Las Vegas and also when she came back to Waverly.
Helen is survived by her son and his wife, John and Rosemary McKee of Rochester, Minnesota; two grandchildren, Matthew and his wife, Margit McKee of Inverness, Illinois, and Martha (McKee) Blackham of Auburn, Alabama; and four great-grandchildren, Claire, Bryan, Reagen and Edwin. Helen was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Paul, one brother, George Kull and two sisters, Mary Rampacek and Jacqueline Jallo.
Celebration of Life Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 26, 2019, at Bartels Good Shepherd Chapel in Waverly, with Pastor Sandra Burroughs officiating. Private family burial will be in Harlington Cemetery in Waverly. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the funeral service at Good Shepherd Chapel on Saturday.
