Obituary

Helen Louise Fox, 83, of Plainfield, Iowa, died Wednesday evening, June 7, 2006, at the Bartels Lutheran Retirement Community, Waverly, Iowa.
She was born on July 20, 1922 in Chickasaw County, near Bassett, Iowa, the daughter of Harry & Goldie (Vanderhayden) Cerwinske. She attended school in Charles City and graduated from the Charles City High School in 1940. She then worked for a time in the state of Washington caring for men who were working on a government project that was unknown to her. She later found out they were constructing the Atomic Bomb. Helen attended Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls where she received her teaching certificate. She then taught rural school near Nashua. On May 6, 1945, she was united in marriage to Roy E. Fox at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. The couple farmed northeast of Plainfield and Helen also taught at several country schools in the Plainfield area. In 1957 they moved to Waverly and Helen continued her education at Wartburg College. In 1958 she began teaching kindergarten in Janesville. In 1964 they returned to Plainfield and in the fall of 1965 she accepted the job to teach kindergarten at the Plainfield school. Roy died on March 29, 1974, and Helen continued to teach until 1976 when she retired.
Helen was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1967 and following her surgery she was able to rebound to become a very early cancer survivor. Over the next years she spent a lot of time on crafts and craft sales, worked as the librarian for the Plainfield Public Library for a time, and spent many, many great times with her family at the “ranch”, her acreage northeast of Plainfield.
She was a longtime, faithful member of the First Baptist Church in Plainfield where she had served as choir director, was a member of the women’s circles and the “Sunshine Girls”, and she also was a member of the Plainfield Women’s Club. Next to her family, teaching was her greatest passion, and she would still receive notes and gifts from friends who were once her students as well as her teaching colleagues.
Helen is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Kathy & Roger Hasstedt of Nashua, Iowa; three grandchildren, Michael Hasstedt, Randy Hasstedt, Julie Hasstedt and her fiancé Brian Meenan; one brother and his wife, Ralph & Betty Cerwinske of Waterloo, and by many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Roy; one granddaughter, Becky; one brother, Fred; one sister, Alice Wagner; one niece, Rosemary Wagner, and one nephew, Bret Cerwinske.
Funeral services will be 11:00 am on Saturday, June 10, 2006, at the First Baptist Church, Plainfield, with Pastor Shawn Geer officiating. Burial will be in the Willow Lawn cemetery, Plainfield. Visitation will be from 4:00 pm until 8:00 pm on Friday at the Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home, Waverly, and on Saturday at the church for one hour prior to the services. Memorials may be directed to the family for a later designation. Condolences may be left at: www.kaisrcorson.com
