Hattie E. Matthias, 83, of Waverly, Iowa passed away on Saturday, April 4, 2009 at the Waverly Health Center in Waverly.
Hattie Elizabeth was born on August 16, 1925, the daughter of Irve A. and Mary Louise (Hundley) Stafford in Waverly, Iowa. She was baptized on September 18, 1925 at the Methodist Church in Waverly. The family then moved to Waterloo, where she began her schooling. In the fourth grade, they returned to Waverly, where she attended the Waverly School System and graduated from high school in 1943. Hattie then began working for Goodrich-Gallagher Produce in Waverly. On July 17, 1945, she was united in marriage to Wesley O. Matthias at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Waverly. She continued to work for Goodrich-Gallagher Produce. In 1958, she went to work as a secretary for Drape Construction for two years and on November 1, 1959, she began her career as a secretary for the accounting department at Viking Pump in Cedar Falls. Hattie and her family moved to Cedar Falls in 1961. She retired from Viking Pump on September 1, 1985, and she and Wesley moved back to Waverly in 1997.
She was a former member of Nazareth Lutheran Church in Cedar Falls and currently a member of Heritage United Methodist Church in Waverly. Hattie also is a life member for the Ex-POW's, former member of the VFW Auxiliary, where she had served as president. Hattie loved to read, work crossword puzzles, collect dolls and she and Wesley bowled in several leagues over the years.
Survivors are her two daughters, Karen Matthias of Waverly, Iowa and Mary (Arthur) McLey of Shell Rock, Iowa; two grandchildren, Butch (Amber) McLey of Waverly, Iowa and Wesley (Deb) McLey of Waterloo, Iowa; two great-grandsons, Jared and Wade McLey; two brothers, August Stafford of Waverly, Iowa and Everett (Gerri) Stafford of Waverly, Iowa. She was preceded in death by her parents; and her husband, Wesley O. Mathias on January 3, 2002.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, April 9, 2009 at 10:30 am at Heritage United Methodist Church in Waverly, Iowa with Pastor Moody Colorado officiating. Burial will follow in the Cedar Valley Memorial Gardens, Cedar Falls, Iowa. Friends may call from 5:00 pm until 8:30 pm on Wednesday at the Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home in Waverly and one hour prior to services on Thursday at the church.
