Gladys Garbes, 100, of Denver, Iowa, formerly of Clarksville, Iowa, passed away on Saturday, November 3, at the Denver Sunset Nursing Home.
Gladys Irene Garbes was born February 22, 1918, in Waverly, Iowa, the daughter of Ray and Henrietta (Jackson) Goodspeed. She attended school in Waverly and following graduation from high school, attended Wartburg College.
Gladys worked on the family dairy as a teenager; later she worked in Waverly at the publishing company, the electric company, and she was working at Cleveland’s Furniture Store as a bookkeeper when she met Leo Garbes. They married on March 21, 1959 at First Baptist Church, Waverly. The couple made their home in Clarksville, Iowa, where they farmed and raised their daughter, Jean.
Gladys accepted the Lord as her personal Savior at a young age and was a faithful member of the First Baptist Church in Waverly. She enjoyed being the Sunday School secretary for many years, a deaconess, and served in many other capacities.
Gladys loved cooking, gardening and canning the produce from her gardens. She raised chickens, ducks, turkeys and loved the farm life. She was a proud grandma and great-grandma.
Gladys is survived by her daughter Jean (Leon) Kampman of Waverly, four grandchildren and their spouses: Megan (Ethan) Epley of Waverly, IA, Lindy (Lance) Ibeling of Parkersburg, IA, Samantha (Taylor) Aukes of Ankeny, IA, and Autumn (Tyler) Terlouw of Shoreview, MN, and nine great-grandchildren, Jackson, Logan, Isaac, Abrah, Austen, and Emmett Epley, Lyla and Sophie Ibeling, Addison Terlouw, and two more on the way. She was preceded in death by her husband Leo in 2012, her parents and one brother, Gordon Goodspeed.
Visitation will be held at Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home in Waverly on Wednesday, November 7, 2018 from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, November 8, 2018, at First Baptist Church, Waverly, with Pastors Dan Eloe and Tyler Terlouw officiating. Burial will occur at Harlington Cemetery at 10:00 a.m. preceding the funeral.
