Florine Grace (Droste) Simon, 85, of Waverly, Iowa , died on Tuesday, May 10, 2005 at the Bartels Lutheran Retirement Community, Waverly.
Florine was born on August 27, 1919 in Bremer County, near Denver, Iowa, the daughter of George and Alma (Bruns) Moeller. She was baptized on September 28, 1919 and was confirmed on April 9, 1933 both at St. Paul’s Evangelical Church, Denver. She attended country school near her home and then attended Waverly High School where she graduated in 1936. She was united in marriage to Warner Droste on February 19, 1937 and the couple made their home in Denver, Iowa. To this union four children were born, Carolyn, Barb, David and Allen. After the children were grown Florine began working at the Riviera Ball Room in Janesville as a waitress. She later worked as a seamstress for The Barn, a women’s clothing store in Waterloo. Florine and Warner were later divorced in the early 1970’s and Florine moved to Waterloo where she met and later married Robert Simon. The couple then moved to Fort Collins, Colorado, and later to Mesa, Arizona. In the mid 1980’s the couple moved to Mesa permantly. Robert died on March 15, 1987 and Florine continued to live in Mesa. In May of 2004 she moved to her apartment at Bartels in Waverly to be closer to family.
Florine was a very creative person, her greatest passion was sewing and creating clothing for her family. She had even made both of her daughter’s wedding dresses plus several more. She had made all of the kid’s clothes when they were young and could “make something out of nothing”. She loved to cook and bake for her family and friends, and her taste in food and clothing were impeccable. She would always look her best and taught her children at a very young age to “sit up straight” and “Take care of themselves” as she did.
She is survived by her two daughters, Carolyn Redies and her husband, Eugene of Frederika, Iowa; Barb Brase and her friend Harley Wescott of Frederika, Iowa; one son, Allen Droste and his friend Judy Short of Denver, Iowa; one sister, Ruth Thomas and her husband Glenn of Davenport, Iowa; nineteen grandchildren and twenty seven great grandchildren and three great great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Robert Simon, one son, David Droste, one grandson, Tim Brase; three brothers, Romane, Duane and George Moeller; and by one son-in-law, Jerry R. Brase.
