Esther Emilie Meta Meta (Steinbronn) Canfield, 89, of Denver, Iowa passed away peacefully at Cedar Valley Hospice House, Waterloo Iowa on 1/9/18 after a courageous battle with cancer.

Esther was born January 19, 1928 on a farm near Readlyn, Iowa to Carl and Erna Sass Steinbronn. She attended country schools through the eighth grade and high school in Stanley, Iowa. She married Melvin Canfield on October 1, 1943. They owned and operated Café 63 and Canfield’s Restaurant from the early 50’s until 1977. For the next 17 years, she worked as a Controller for Schumacher Elevator Company, retiring in 1996. She was a life-long member of St. Peter Lutheran Church where she enjoyed her time spent with the ladies of the Quilters Guild.

She is survived by her Significant other of twenty-seven years, Duane Janssen; seven daughters, Judith Decker of Westgate, Iowa, Loretta Canfield of Denver, Iowa, Sandra (George) Chaffee of Sun City, Arizona, Marcella (Larry) Gilliand of Sarasota, Florida, Kathy (Chris) Hopkins of Earlham Iowa, Marilyn (Mark) Huber of Denver, Iowa, Debbie (John) Bracelin of Milford, Iowa and one son, Melvin (Julie) Canfield Jr. of Des Moines Iowa; brothers and sisters, Robert (Mildred) Steinbronn of Fayette, Iowa, Lucille Block of Westgate, Iowa, Wilbert (Marjorie) Steinbronn of Fairbank, Iowa, Carole (Sister-in-law) of Westgate, Iowa, Irene Reinking of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Pauline (Keith) Snodgrass of San Tan Valley, Arizona, George (Janice) Steinbronn of Maynard, Iowa, and John (Cisco) Steinbronn of Oelwein, Iowa. Esther has twenty-three grandchildren, fifty great grandchildren, two great great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Esther is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, an infant son, Kenneth Lee, a son-in-law, Roger Decker, a brother, Raymond, a brother-in-law, William Block, and a great granddaughter, Marina Lapointe.

Visitation will be from 4-7 pm Thursday, January 11 at Kaiser Corson Funeral Home, Denver, Iowa and an hour before the services at the church. Funeral Service will be at 2:00 pm Friday, January 12 at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Denver, Iowa with a reception immediately following in the church basement. Interment will be at Floral Hills Cemetery in Oelwein following the reception. In Lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Cedar Valley Hospice and St. Peter Lutheran Church.

Her special interests were traveling and her flower gardens. Above all she cherished her faith, her family, her friends, and the simple things in life. She was dearly loved by her family and friends and will be missed by all.
