OBITUARY

Esther Anna Clara Zabel Homeister, 83, of rural Waverly, Iowa, died on Tuesday, March 25, 2003, at Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo, Iowa, of natural causes.

Esther was born on October 5, 1919, in Bremer, Iowa, the daughter of William and Stena (Ohlendorf) Zabel. She was baptized in Peace Church, Tripoli, Iowa and later confirmed by Rev. Walter Kock on March 25, 1934, in Peace Church, Fredericksburg, Iowa. She lived and attended country school in Bremer, Iowa until the fourth grade. In 1928, the family moved to a farm near Fredericksburg where she attended country school through the eighth grade. On July 17, 1938, she was united in marriage to Henry C. Homeister at the Peace Church in Fredericksburg, Iowa. The couple made their home on a farm southeast of Waverly. This became the family farm where Esther and Henry lived for over sixty years. Henry passed away on October 25, 1998.

Esther was a longtime member of Peace United Church of Christ in Waverly. She was also a member of the Material Aid Club, Garden Club and Coffee Sipper Club. She enjoyed quilting for her family. She made quilts for each milestone in the lives of her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, great great grandchildren and many other friends. Esther enjoyed participating in the farmers market in Waverly and loved to travel.

She is survived by 7 sons and their wives, Willard & Marlys Homeister of Keystone, IA, John & Sandy Homeister of Waverly, IA, Fred & Marlene Homeister of Tripoli, IA, Paul & Pat Homeister of Horton, IA, Lester & Peggy Homeister of McCalla, AL, Robert & Cheryl Homeister of Shell Rock, IA,Staff Sergeant Allan & Alexandra Homeister of Camp Lejeune, NC, (and is currently deployed to Kuwait); 6 daughters and their husbands, Dorothy & Ray Roberts of Perry, IA, Betty & Dean Schilling of New Braunfels, TX, Margaret & Larry Wildeboer of Waverly, IA, Hermina & David Spree of Waverly, IA, Marilyn & Dennis Albrecht of Waverly, IA, Carolyn & John Vossberg of Janesville, IA; 37 grandchildren; 52 great-grandchildren; and 3 great great grandchildren; 1 brother, Paul Zabel and his wife, Virginia of Cedar Rapids, IA; 3 sisters-in-law, Doris Homeister of Ava, MO, Rose Zabel of Sumner, IA, Marcella Zabel of Fredericksburg; one brother-in-law, LuVern Homeister of Waverly; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Henry; one daughter, Louise in infancy; 3 grandchildren, Sarah Wildeboer, Mark Homeister and Craig Homeister; 4 brothers, Alfred, Elmer, Wilbert and Glenn Zabel; and 3 sisters, Elsie Homeister, Frieda Kottke and Dorothy Miller.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, March 31, 2003 at 10:30 a.m. at Peace United Church of Christ in Waverly with Pastor Suzanne Miller officiating. Burial will be in Harlington Cemetery, Waverly, Iowa. Friends may call from 1:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Sunday at the Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home in Waverly and for an hour before services at the church. There will be a public prayer service on Sunday at 8:00 p.m. at the Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home in Waverly. Memorials may be directed to the Homeister family and a memorial fund will be established at a later date.
