Duane Arnold “Zeke” Bergmann, age 75, of Waverly, Iowa, died Thursday, May 10, 2018, at Covenant Medical Center in Waterloo.
Duane was born on July 27, 1942, in Waterloo, Iowa, the son of Arnold and Lillian (Ohmann) Bergmann. He was raised in Denver, Iowa, and graduated from the Denver High School in 1961. On August 28, 1966, Duane was united in marriage to Karen Brettmann at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Waverly. He worked for Waterloo Register in Waterloo, Carnation/Nestle’ in Waverly, and in 1973, went to work for John Deere in Waterloo. During John Deere layoffs, Duane went to Hawkeye Tech, obtained his Commercial Driver’s License and drove semi until being called back to work at John Deere. Duane retired in 2002.
Duane was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Waverly and John Deere UAW Teamsters Union in Waterloo. He was well known for his homemade fudge. Duane enjoyed woodworking, trout fishing, mushroom hunting, bike riding, and traveling, however, what he enjoyed most was time with family, especially his grandchildren.
Duane’s memory is honored by: his wife, Karen Bergmann of Waverly, Iowa; daughter, Amy Hurley of Maple Grove, Minnesota; son, Darin (Billie) Bergmann of Urbandale, Iowa; honorary family member, Sarah Gregory of Green Bay, Wisconsin; five grandchildren, Michael and Benjamin Hurley and Trevin, Calvin, and Kylie Bergmann; two sisters, Marlys (Norm) Fischels of Independence, Iowa and Donna (Don) Hulsing of Waverly, Iowa; a brother-in-law, Roger (Marian) Brettmann of Denver, Iowa; and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, LaVerne Bergmann.
Duane has donated his body to science. Celebration of Life Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, June 1, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Waverly with Pastor Keith Brustuen officiating. Visitation will be held on Friday, June 1, at. St. John's Lutheran Church from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service.
