Dr. Melvin L. Kramer, 82, of Waverly, Iowa passed away on Monday, July 19, 2010 at the Bartels Lutheran Retirement Community in Waverly.
Melvin LeRoy Kramer was born on November 2, 1927, the son of Lawrence and Charlotte (Knappe) Kramer in Strawberry Point, Iowa. He graduated from Strawberry Point High School. In March of 1945 he enlisted in the US Navy, serving during World War II until his discharge in December of 1947. Following his discharge he enrolled at Wartburg College. On June 5, 1951, he was united in marriage with Rosemarie Gayer at the Peace Lutheran Church in Rock Valley, Iowa. The couple moved to Primghar, Iowa, where they both taught for two years after which they moved to Iowa City, Iowa, where Mel completed his Masters and PhD. In 1956, Mel accepted a position as chairman of the Business and Economics Department at Wartburg College, where he taught for 40 years. Following his retirement, he was elected to the Waverly City Council, where he served two terms.
Mel was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, where he was serving on the Building and Grounds committee. Over the years, he also served as Mediator and Negotiator for the State of Iowa, was school board President for Waverly- Shell Rock high school, and was a tennis instructor and Wartburg tennis coach. Mel enjoyed fishing, hunting, bird watching, gardening, the Chicago CUBS, and playing cards and games with family and friends. Mel was a huge Wartburg sports fan.
Survivors are his wife, Rosemarie Kramer of Waverly, Iowa; son, Bradley (Denise) Kramer of Waverly, Iowa; three daughters, Kathryn (Brian) Kingery of Tripoli, Iowa, Diane Kramer (Brad Kjos) of St. Louis Park, Minnesota, and Carolyn Kramer (Jonathan Steinwand)of Moorhead, Minnesota; 10 grandchildren, Evan and Austin Kramer, Heather, Anne, Leslie and Julia Kingery, Erika and Nicholas Kjos and Gabriel and Anna Steinwand; 4 great grandchildren, Victoria, Mariah, Lincoln and Mia; three brothers, Lyle (Barbara) Kramer, William (Shirley) Kramer, and Edward (Mildred) Kramer all of Urbandale, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral services will be held on Friday at 11:00 am at St. Paul's Lutheran Church with Pastors Curt Schneider and Ramona Bouzard presiding. Burial will follow in St. Paul's Lutheran cemetery. Friends may call from 4:00 pm until 7:00 pm on Thursday at the Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home in Waverly and also an hour prior to services on Friday at the church.
