Dorothy Irene Stoddard, 95, of Waverly, Iowa, and formerly of Shell Rock, Iowa, died Monday morning, January 19, 2015, at the Waverly Health Center of natural causes.
Dorothy was born on November 15, 1919, in Greene, Iowa, the daughter of Martin and Alma (Euchner) Waidelich. She was baptized on April 28, 1920, in Colwell, Iowa, and confirmed at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Waverly on December 12, 1937. At a young age, Dorothy moved with her family to a farm between Greene and Marble Rock where she attended country school through the 2nd grade. The family then moved to Shell Rock where Dorothy attended country school through the 8th grade. She then attended the Shell Rock High School, graduating in 1937. Dorothy worked at the Butler County Court House in Allison before moving to Waterloo and going to work for Hinson Manufacturing Company during WWII. On November 14, 1942, Dorothy was united in marriage to Harry Stoddard at Grace Lutheran Church in San Diego, California. The couple made their home in Waterloo where Dorothy continued to work for Hinson's while Harry served his country overseas. Upon Harry's discharge from the military, the couple made their home in Waverly, and their son Kenton was born on November 25, 1946. The family later moved to Shell Rock and on September 26, 1949, Harry died at the age of 29 from complications of rheumatic fever. This forced Dorothy to take in boarders, mainly teachers to make ends meet for her and Kenton. She also began her housekeeping and business cleaning career working for area families and businesses. Some of the businesses included Jebe Funeral Home in Shell Rock, Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home, Drs. Carstensen and Brunkhorst all in Waverly. Dorothy also worked for ten years at CUNA Mutual at the Heritage Way location in housekeeping and maintenance, before going to work at Covenant Clinic where she retired from in her late 80's. Dorothy became a resident of the Bartels Lutheran Retirement Community in August of 2012.
Dorothy was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Waverly. In her spare time Dorothy loved to clean houses and enjoyed gardening (she had a real green thumb).
Dorothy is survived by her daughter-in-law, Carol Stoddard of Waverly, Iowa; her two grandchildren, Wayne and Gayle Stoddard both of Waverly; her sister, Kathryan Knops of Minneapolis, Minnesota; two nieces, Janet Waidelich of Waverly and Mary (Brian) Qualley of Iowa Falls; and a nephew, Dan (Joleen) Waidelich of Norwalk. Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, Martin and Alma; her husband, Harry; her son, Kenton; a brother at birth in 1925; her brother and his wife, Henry (Myrtle) Waidelich; and a brother-in-law, John Knops.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, January 23, 2015, at 10:30 a.m. at St. John Lutheran Church in Waverly, with Pastor Keith Brustuen and Pastor Matthew Versemann officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery in Shell Rock. Public visitation will be held on Thursday, January 22nd from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. at the Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home in Waverly and also for an hour prior to services on Friday at the church.
