Don was born to Frederick Brundage and Hattie Clarinda (Knutson) Swinton in their home in Hampton Village, Minnesota, the fifth of their fourteen children. At an early age he moved with his parents and older siblings to a farm north of Nashua, Iowa. He attended the nearby one room country school, as did all of his brothers and sisters, and graduated from Nashua High School in 1939. After retiring from Carnation he had a summer job with Ramker Construction as ground keeper in Willow Lawn addition and around the office buildings. Due to health issues he retired from that in the fall of 2008 at the age of 86. Besides working he enjoyed many years of fishing in Lakes near Gordon, Wisconsin with family and friends; goose and duck hunting in Saskatchewan, Canada, trout fishing in N.E. Iowa. In the winter, Don and Dorothy spent time in Hemet, California to be near their sons and families.
