REV DAVID A. NELSON

The Rev. David A. Nelson, 81, of Waverly, IA passed away on Sunday, September 24, 2017 at Bartels Lutheran Retirement Community surrounded by family.

Mr. Nelson was born September 17, 1936, in Urbana, IL, the son of the Rev. Elmer and Mabel Mae(Jones) Nelson. He grew up in Rantoul, IL and graduated from Rantoul High School. He received a Bachelor of Arts from Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa, and a Master of Divinity from Wartburg Theological Seminary in Dubuque, Iowa. He was ordained in 1962.

He married Patricia Ann Larson on August 20th, 1961 at Glendale Lutheran Church in Seattle, WA. They invited 300 people and the Pastor invited the entire congregation, 600+ people showed up for their wedding.

He pastored at Lord of Life Lutheran Church in North Haledon, NJ, Immanuel Lutheran Church in Earlville, IL and Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Champaign, IL. He served as a Regional Director from 1985-1987 for the ALC/Commitment to Mission. In 1987, he joined Wartburg College as a Senior Development Officer. During his years he raised over $100 million for the College and the National Church. He served on the Executive Committee for the Division for Life and Mission with the ALC from 1980 to 1985. During his years as a student at Wartburg College (1954-1958) he and his brother Duane gave Clinton Hall its name in a contest.

David was a member of Nazareth Lutheran Church in Cedar Falls, IA, Wartburg College Heritage Society, and the Lions Club in Champaign, IL. He was an avid golfer and loved to travel. Some of his favorite destinations included Seattle, WA, Barcelona and the Vatican.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Patricia; two sons, Jim (Anna) of Pembroke Pines, FL and Jon of Waverly, IA and Minneapolis, MN; one daughter, Julie of Champaign, IL; two grandchildren, Ashley of Nashville, TN and Steven of New York City; two brothers, Duane (Marlys) of Vadnais Heights, MN and Dr. Dan (Beth) of Champaign, IL; two sisters, Linda (Jan) Horne of Robins, IA and Leah (Walt) Haussmann of Lewisburg, PA; several nieces and nephews; and two grand dogs, Chloe and Cody of Champaign, IL. He was preceded in death by his parents.

According to his wishes, David’s body has been cremated, and a memorial service will be held at Wartburg College Chapel on Sunday, October 1, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. with Pastor Brian King officiating. Visitation will be on Saturday, September 30, 2017 from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home in Waverly. Burial of cremains will be at a later date in Eden Park Cemetery, Rantoul, IL. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Cedar Valley Hospice, Wartburg College, or a charity of donor’s choice. Online condolences may be left at www.kaisercorson.com.
