Obituary

Carol Jean (Johnson) Huston, 87, died Sunday, Dec. 18, at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines. She had resided the past two years in Albia but was a long-time resident of Waverly where she served many years as Deputy Clerk of Court.

She was born Jan. 29, 1929 in Columbia, MO, to Minnie (Ravenscraft) and James L. Johnson of Columbia. She was an outstanding student and graduated from Hickman High School in Columbia. In 1949, while she was an office assistant to a doctor, she met Don Huston who was a veteran attending the University of Missouri. They married Sept. 16, 1950 and she worked as secretary to the three Soil Extension Agents located on the university campus.

After Don graduated in June, 1950, they moved to Audubon, IA, where he became editor of The Audubon News-Guide. Their first three children were born there over the next four years. In August 1955, Don was hired as an editor for the Waverly Newspapers and served in that capacity until retiring in 1993. Carol also retired at that time from her Court House post with the Clerk of Court.

Earlier in her job career Carol attained many skills through her work experience. Already an excellent cook, she honed her culinary skills by working as a restaurant cook. She expanded her baking expertise and learned to be an artistic cake decorator by working in a bakery. Being an excellent, teaching mother she rose in that stature through the years of raising seven children. The skills of her court clerk work were attained over her earliest years of working for a doctor and at the university. She was, indeed, a woman of many talents. Her greatest talent was giving unselfish love to God, to her husband, her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Over the next several years after retirement, they enjoyed traveling to visit their children who eventually located all around the country. The couple moved to Albia in late December 2014 to be near daughter Janis Paxton, and her husband Dave and their three children and two grandchildren (great-grands for Carol). She was active in volunteer work at Trinity United Methodist Church in Waverly and had also become a volunteer at Trinity UMC in Albia.

Carol is survived by her husband, by six children: Patricia (partner Suzann Jacques) Meyer of Iowa City; David (Judy) Huston, Frisco, TX; Janis Paxton (David), Albia; Donald (Joan) Huston, Boise, ID; Denis (Cathy) Huston, Orinda, CA; Devon (Laura) Huston, Peoria, AZ. She also leaves 12 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two brothers; and three sisters.

She was preceded by her parents; one son, Daniel; three sisters; and two brothers.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Dec. 28, 2016, at 10:30 a.m. at Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home in Waverly with Pastor Carolyn Bowers officiating.
