Obituary

Arvylla Lee (Metzger Shere Carpenter) Fink, age 86, passed peacefully in her sleep on March 7, 2019, at Waverly Health Care Center in Waverly, Iowa.

Arvylla was born to Carl Taft and Mildred Ann (Harris) Metzger on October 17, 1932, in Clear Lake, Iowa. She attended school in Sumner, Waterloo, and Janesville. She married Donald Shere on October 23, 1948 and to that union were born three children. They resided in Janesville where she raised her children and spent her time tending a greenhouse, providing fresh flowers to the church and community. She was a horseback rider, outdoorswoman, and 4-H leader as well. Don passed away in 1962. She was married to Robert (Bob) Carpenter on June 1, 1963. Early in their marriage Arvylla’s parents passed and they raised her brother and sisters along with her own children. Later on, Bob and Arvylla camped and fished in Canada, travelled, and raised dogs. They lived in Janesville, West Union, and Charles City. Bob passed away in 1991. Arvylla married Norman Fink on February 18, 1995. They met while volunteering at Allen Hospital. Norman and Arvylla traveled extensively overseas as well as working with the NOMADS in the southern United States. They enjoyed spending time watching the wildlife outside their window in the house along the river in Janesville. Arvylla was an active member of the Janesville United Methodist Church, UMW, Rebekah Lodge- where she served as Noble Grand of Shamrock Rebekah Lodge, she sang in the choir, enjoyed watching her grandchildren and great-grandchildren’s activities, and played dominoes at the community center. Norman and Arvylla were also active at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Westgate, Iowa. Arvylla was an avid rock hound and could always find an agate no matter where she was.

She is survived by: her husband, Norman Fink; her three children, Daniel (Teresa) Shere of Evansdale, Dianne (Gordy) Howe of Shell Rock, and Emily (Jim) Stensland of Cedar Falls; 6 grandchildren; and 7 great-grandchildren; brother Carl (Terri) Metzger of Cedar Falls; sister, Claudia (Lorenzo) Alvarado of Devine, Texas; step-children, Deb (JR) Schemmel of Vinton, Jeryl (Rhonda) Fink of Sumner, Julie (Rudy) Schaff of Westgate, Linda (Kurt) Sparks of Waterloo, Mike (Lori) Carpenter of Thief River Falls, Minnesota, and Rena (Arlis) Roemhildt of Elysian, Minnesota; 16 step-grandchildren; and 3 step-great-grandchildren. Arvylla was preceded in death by; her parents; husband Donald; husband Robert; sister Mary Ellen Yenzer; and infant sister Priscilla.

Arvylla has been cremated and memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, March 11, at the United Methodist Church in Janesville with Pastor Mike Carey officiating. Visitation will be held on Monday, March 11, at Janesville United Methodist Church from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service at 11:00. Memorials may be directed to Janesville United Methodist Church and online condolences may be left at www.kaisercorson.com.
