Arlan Lavern Luhring, 92, of Waverly, Iowa, died Thursday, December 22, 2016, at Bartels Lutheran Retirement Community in Waverly.
Arlan Luhring was born on July 13, 1924 in Bremer County, the son of Meta (Neuendorf) and Friedrich (Bill) Wilhelm Luhring. He was baptized on August 3, 1924 and confirmed on April 30, 1938, both at St. John Lutheran Church-Western Douglas. Arlan attended country school, and as a young child, after the death of his father, began farming beside his mother. On February 16, 1947, Arlan was united in marriage to Norma R. Scharnhorst at St. John Lutheran Church-Western Douglas. The couple farmed until 1986 when Arlan retired, and later moved to Waverly.
Arlan was a member of St. John Lutheran Church-Western Douglas, and a social member of both the Waverly AMVETS Post #79, and Joe W. Cretzmeyer VFW Post #228 in Waverly. He enjoyed spending time with family, fishing, and camping, but especially enjoyed farming and playing cards.
Arlan's memory is honored by four sons, Larry (Paula) Luhring of Waverly, Marvin (Carol) Luhring of Tripoli, Roger (Cindy) Luhring of Tripoli, and Leon (Deb) Luhring of Waverly; eight grandchildren, Lana (Shawn Bailey) Luhring, Richard (Christine Dowd) Luhring, Michelle (Tyson) Jacobi, Heather (Randy) Roshek, Kevin (Amber Boevers) Luhring, Michael (Kimberly) Luhring, Sara (Jeremy) Voigts, Mark (Danielle) Luhring; three step-grandchildren David (Stephanie) McKenna, Darin McKenna and Dustin (Anna) McKenna; twelve great-grandchildren; eight step great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Arlan was preceded in death by Norma in 2008; his parents; two sisters, Leona (Howard) Tegtmeier and Elnora (Arthur) Petersen and a half-brother, Loren Mummelthei.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, December 28, 2016, at St. John Lutheran Church-Western Douglas, rural Plainfield. Burial will follow in Harlington Cemetery in Waverly. Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, December 27, 2016 at Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home in Waverly, and for one hour prior to the service at the church on Wednesday.
