Viola H. Wittenburg, 95, of Shell Rock, Iowa and previously from rural Bremer, Iowa, passed away on Saturday afternoon, May 11, 2019, at the Shell Rock Healthcare Center.
Viola was born on October 15, 1923, in Bremer County, Iowa, the daughter of Lydia (Bunger) and Carl Traetow. She was baptized, confirmed, and attended school at St. Paul’s Church, Artesian. On September 9, 1945, Viola was united in marriage to Arlin John Wittenburg at St. John Lutheran Church. The couple initially farmed north of Bremer, Iowa and then moved to a farm east of Bremer. In addition to farming beside Arlin, Viola worked at the grocery store in Bremer, Farmers Produce in Tripoli, and for Farmers Exchange in Waverly. Arlin passed away in 1999, and Viola continued to live on the farm. In 2014 she moved to The Meadows in Shell Rock, Iowa.
Viola was a long-time member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Artesian. She enjoyed crocheting and donated many afghans to Cedar Valley Hospice. While living at the Meadows, Viola liked playing cards, Bingo, and Hot Dice. She also collected salt and pepper shakers, and treasured time spent with her family.
Viola is survived by two granddaughters, Linda (Jeff) LaField of Canyon Lake, TX, and Natalie (Ty) Williams of Tonkawa, Oklahoma; one grandson, David (Bethany) Wittenburg of Dallas, Texas; six great-grandchildren, Dalton and Tatum LaField, and Owen, Aiden, Noah, and Hailey Wittenburg; two sisters-in-law, Frieda Traetow of Waverly, Iowa, and Marlys Wittenburg of Readlyn, Iowa; daughter-in-law, Preshita Wittenburg of Universal City, Texas; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by Arlin; her parents; two sons, James and Kendall Wittenburg; one brother, Edgar Traetow; and two sisters, Lucinda Meier and Alice Moeller.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, May 16, 2019, at Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home in Waverly with Pastor Larry Feldt officiating. Burial will follow in Harlington Cemetery, Waverly. Visitation will be on Wednesday, May 15, 2019, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Kaiser-Corson Funeral home in Waverly, and also one hour prior to the service.
