Obituary

Billy (William) James Rover, age 40, of Shell Rock, died unexpectedly at work on Friday, May 10, 2019.

Billy was born on October 11, 1978, in Mason City, Iowa, the youngest son of James and Marjorie (Epley) Rover. He was raised in rural Bristow and then Shell Rock, Iowa. He graduated from Waverly-Shell Rock High School in 1997. In high school, Billy excelled at wrestling and football; he enjoyed the team comradery. Billy attended the University of Northern Iowa and was employed with the NRCS before he joined Epley Brothers Hybrids in 2001.

On April 29, 2006, Billy was united in marriage to Jen Eschweiler at Faith Lutheran Church in Shell Rock, where he was a member. Billy and Jen have two daughters, Peyton and Taylor. Billy found pride in sharing the enjoyment of hunting, fishing, and farming with his daughters. He was a member of Pheasants Forever, a township trustee, and served on the Shell Rock 4th of July Committee. His love for his family, the community, and farming was apparent to everyone who knew Billy.

Billy’s passion for farming began at a young age. His first corn crop was planted in his sandbox. Within the agricultural community, he grew into a leader as he shared his enthusiasm and commitment to farming through his position at Epley Hybrids. He strived to contribute to the advancement of farming practices and seed breeding. In his free time, Billy could be found with a fishing rod or hunting rifle in hand.

Billy’s memory is honored by his wife, Jen Rover of Shell Rock; two daughters, Peyton and Taylor Rover of Shell Rock; his parents, James and Marjorie Rover of Ames, Iowa; a brother Michael (Tammy Bowser) Rover of Westgate, Iowa; a sister, Jennifer (Brad Greiner) Rover of Chester, South Dakota; a father- and mother-in-law, Doug and Vicky Eschweiler of Waverly; a brother-in-law, Matthew Eschweiler; two nephews, Andrew Rover and Kane Greiner; and a niece, Allie Rover and her son Ben. He was preceded in death by his grandparents Lester, Rena, and Evelyn Rover and Kenneth and Anna Epley.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, May 17, at Faith Lutheran Church in Shell Rock with Pastor Kim Smith officiating. Following the service, friends are encouraged to join Billy’s family for lunch and fellowship. Visitation is 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 16 at Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home in Shell Rock.
