Obituary

Merlin W. Pothast, 91, of Shell Rock, died Sunday, January 6, 2019, at the Waverly Health Center in Waverly.

Merlin W. Pothast was born on March 9, 1927, on a farm in Warren Township, Bremer County, northeast of Waverly, Iowa, the son of Arthur and Meta (Benning) Pothast. When Merlin was 9 years old, he was diagnosed with Epilepsy and had not had a seizure since 1990, something he was very proud of. He was baptized in St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Waverly on April 1, 1927 and confirmed in the same church on May 28, 1944. After he finished his formal education in Warren #2 County School, he worked with his parents on the family farm until 1962, when he started working at the Bremer County Home. In August of 1963, he was united in marriage to Henrietta S. Wiebrand. Merlin then worked for the Chickasaw County Home in New Hampton until 1967, and for the next two years worked on the Del Trowbridge farm near Charles City. From 1969 until 1972, he worked on the Glen Nystrom farm near Denver. In 1972, Merlin attended N.I.A.C.C. in Mason City and worked for Sherman Nurseries in Charles City, and from 1979 until 1981 worked for Riverside Cemetery in Charles City. For a short while Merlin then worked for the Prairie Court Housing in Janesville and from 1984 until his retirement in 1989, worked at the Waverly Homes.

Merlin was a former member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Waverly. Merlin was an active volunteer with the Iowa State Police Association from 1984 until 2000. Merlin enjoyed listening to country-western music and watching the birds. He loved to go for drives to check the fields and traveling to Branson, Missouri.

He is survived by several nieces and nephews and a step-sister, Janet (Donald) McClain. He is preceded in death by his parents, step-mother Reba Pothast, his wife, Henrietta, four sisters, baby girl Pothast, Mildred Pothast, Ardith Roberts and Ruth Arns; two brothers, Donald Pothast and Henry Pothast.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, January 11, 2019, at the Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home in Waverly with visitation held for one hour prior to service time. Burial will be held in Garden of Memories Cemetery in Waterloo. Memorials may be directed to St. Paul’s Lutheran Church or the Epilepsy Foundation.
