Obituary

Doris Joyce Leeper, 90, of Clarksville, Iowa, died July 30, 2018, at Clarksville Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

Doris was born on February 24, 1928 in Birmingham, England, the daughter of Harry and Ethel D. (Williams) Lucas. She was baptized in Birmingham, England and attended Cathays National Christian Education School in Cardiff, Wales from 1932 to 1942. Doris met her beloved “Lester B” during World War II while she was working with the Women’s Land Army in Cardiff when Lester was in the US Navy. They were united in marriage on August 31, 1946 in Cardiff. In December of that same year, the couple settled in Iowa. They made their home on the Leeper family farm south of Clarksville. The city girl became a farmer and worked alongside Lester for the next 46 years. Doris was proud to become a United States citizen on February 7, 1950. Lester died on December 4, 1992, and shortly after this, Doris moved into Clarksville.

Doris was an active member of Unity Presbyterian Church, rural Clarksville, where she was a trustee, Sunday school teacher, memorial committee member, and Bible school teacher. She was also a longtime member of Rebekah Lodge #533 and an active Bible study participant. Doris loved cats, especially her precious Cleo. Proud of her Welsh heritage to the end, Doris loved tea, as long as it was made in the correct Welsh way. She enjoyed collecting decorative teapots. Doris liked cooking, knitting baby blankets, gardening, and babysitting the special children in her life. She was a good friend and touched many lives.

Doris is lovingly remembered by her sister Aileen Lucy Charles; niece Lynne Sullivan; nephews Peter Piggott, Jeffrey Charles (Allison), David Charles, Lyle Leeper (Elaine), and Jim Leeper (Cathy); great nieces and nephews Aime Bailey, Louanne Huisman (Larry), Evonne Leeper (Josh Thompson), Connie Leeper (Toshio), Ollie Charles, Josef Charles, Russ Leeper (Susan); and great-great nieces and nephews Brittney Huisman, Phoenix Leeper, Jordon Huisman, and Alfie Wilson. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Lester, and three sisters Doreen Lucy Lucas, Jean Muriel Sullivan, and Beryl Sylvia Piggott.

A funeral service for Doris will be held August 20, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. at Community Methodist Church in Clarksville with Rev. Joan Thomas and Rev. Russ Leeper officiating. Burial will be in the Lynwood Cemetery in Clarksville. Visitation will be held at Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home in Shell Rock on August 19 at 4:00 p.m. and conclude with a Rebekah Service at 6:00 p.m. by Clarksville Rebekah #533. Visitation will resume one hour before the service at the church on Monday. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the American Diabetes Association and Age UK, an organization that provides services and support for older people in the United Kingdom.
