Obituary

Josephine Marie "Jo" Bonker, aged 92 years, was born September 29, 1925, in Houston, Texas. She was the daughter of Charles and Frances (Vincer) Scardino. She was baptized into the Christian faith in infancy and later confirmed at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Houston. Josephine received her education in the Houston school system, graduating from Lamar High School in 1943.

Jo was united in marriage to Lawrence “Larry” Arthur Bonker on November 4, 1950, in Houston. The couple made their home in San Antonio, TX, and Livermore, CA, until Larry's discharge from the Air Force when they moved to Northwood, IA, near Larry’s childhood home in Manly, IA. Following retirement, Larry and Jo moved to Waverly, IA, in 1989 to be closer to family.

Jo enjoyed spending time with family, reading, playing cards with friends, and working crossword puzzles.

Jo died of natural causes and joined the Lord on February 4, 2018. She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers Charles (Hazel) and Anthony (Carrie) Scardino, two sisters Angie (Eddie) Stepchinski and Lena (Roy) Claiborne, and her husband of 57 years. She is survived by two brothers, John (Ann) Scardino and Pete (Shirley) Scardino in Texas, her son Lawrence Jr. (Deborah) Bonker of Perrysburg, OH; her daughter Dana (Michael) Wedeking of Waverly, IA; two grandchildren, Teri (Whitley) Burrier of Moline, IL, and David (Brittany) Wedeking of Bettendorf, IA; and two great-grandchildren, Broderick and Mackenzie Burrier.

According to her wishes, Jo’s body has been cremated. A memorial service to honor her life will be at 11:00 a.m., on Saturday, March 17, 2018, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church and School in Waverly, with Pastor Arthur Bergren officiating. Visitation will be two hours prior to the memorial service at the church. Burial of cremains will follow at Lynwood Cemetery in Clarksville.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the family for distribution to St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Bartels Nursing Home, or as directed. Online condolences may be left at www.kaisercorson.com. Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home in Waverly is assisting the family.
