Elaine Bertha (Heule) Senst, 94, of Waverly, Iowa, passed away on Friday, July 14, 2017, at Clarksville Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Clarksville, Iowa, of natural causes.
Elaine was born on March 1, 1923, in Sheboygan, Wisconsin, the daughter of Charles and Hedwig (Steil) Heule. She was raised in Sheboygan Falls and graduated from the Sheboygan Falls High School on June 11, 1941. Elaine then attended Milwaukee Hospital School of Nursing, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, graduating as a registered nurse in September of 1945. Upon graduating she went to work at Passavant Hospital in Milwaukee. On May 10, 1947, Elaine was united in marriage to George D. Senst in Sheboygan Falls. The couple made their home in Lamont, Iowa, until 1950, when they moved to a farm near Waverly, Iowa. Elaine worked as a nurse in Waverly for Dr. Carstensen and Dr. Brunkhorst, and Dr. Fagre. George died on August 24, 1983, and Elaine continued to live in her home until October of 2015, when she became a resident of the Clarksville Skilled Nursing & Rehabilitation Center.
Elaine was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Waverly, a past member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church-Siegel, where she taught Sunday school and was on the church council, and a member of Waverly American Legion Auxiliary. She loved volunteering at Bartels in the Ice Cream Shop. Elaine enjoyed collecting Hummel's, cooking and baking, hosting family dinners, and socializing with friends. Her greatest enjoyment, however, was time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Elaine's memory is honored by: two daughters, Jean (Ron) Shaw of Waverly and Heidi Senst of Waverly, Iowa; six grandchildren, Michael (Jennifer) Shaw of Fort Collins, Colorado, Laura (Scott) Thompson of Cedar Falls, Iowa, Lindsey (Joel) Baskett of Waverly, Rebecca (Luke) Bond of Waverly, Jordyn Shaw of Waverly, and Andrew (Bethany) Soteres of Allen, Texas; and fifteen great-grandchildren. Elaine was preceded in death by: her parents; her husband; a daughter, Kathleen Soteres in 1999; and a brother, Charles Heule Jr. in 2000.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, July 21, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church & School in Waverly, with Pastor Arthur Bergren officiating. Burial will be in the Harlington Cemetery in Waverly. Public visitation will be held on Thursday, July 20 from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home in Waverly and for one hour prior to services on Friday at the church.
